“It’s absolutely a human rights crime,” says Mac McClelland of the ongoing disaster on the Gulf Coast, where oil from BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig continues to gush into the water despite multiple attempts to plug the leak. Attorney General Eric Holder has announced a criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the spill, as BP announced that it was done trying to plug the leak. All the cute code names (“top hat,” “top kill”) in the world haven’t been able to stop the crisis, which in addition to killing 11 workers in the initial explosion, has shut down huge portions of the Gulf to fishing and other industries while devastating the wildlife.

Open Letter to President Obama re: Gulf Oil Spill
Dear Mr. President,
I have an idea for you.
A lot of people and pundits seem to be wasting time debating about whether you are responding adequately to this crisis. I know that you know the gravity and the seriousness of this situation. I know that you are seeking advice from good advisers. I am just an average citizen so please excuse me if you’ve thought of this already.
Recent news reports allude to the fact that the US Government may be building a criminal case against BP. I cannot disagree that this may be warranted but the timing is terrible. There are two problems that I see. If BP now knows that no matter what they do they are facing criminal charges when all is said and done are they going to be motivated to finding the right solution? Then there is the problem of having BP in charge. If they are to be considered as criminals under investigation do we really want to leave BP in charge?
Here is my suggestion for how you can demonstrate true leadership on this crisis. I suggest you convene a summit of the entire Oil Industry and rally their support in helping to end this crisis once and for all. There is most certainly a vast amount of resources and technology available if this could be done.
Why should they do it? Because our planet is in serious peril and they may even benefit greatly from the public relations aspect of working together to solve this.
They also owe it to their customers who continue to buy their product and provide their massive profits. They can put those profits back to work for their customers and save the Gulf Coast from further devastation. I know lawyers will debate about liability and single source responsibility etc….but every minute we debate is a minute wasted. Somehow the US Government, under your leadership, needs to bring the Oil Industry in to help. Too much is at stake not to. If you need to give them assurances that each individual company (besides BP of course) will not be held responsible for the leak or the failure to stop it then so be it.
But at least the Public will know that every single resource is being devoted to stopping this leak. This should be done ASAP because time is wasting and this disaster gets worse each minute. It’s a tall order but at least you’ve got to try and assert this type of commander in chief leadership for the American People but most of all for the people of the Gulf Coast and the environment. As BP shareholders abandon the sinking BP ship and put the company’s future in jeopardy the American Public is left wondering how a company that is failing AND potentially under criminal investigation can possibly be really effective at this point.

Proposition 16 & 14 – vote “NO”.
Prop 16 is an attempt by PG&E Corporation to take over the California govt.
by preventing citizens from using Solar power, or selling Solar power to PG&E.
It would prevent citizens from being able to pass local law to use Solar power.
Prop 16 would allow PG&E to block any local group from selling Solar power back to PG&E.
Prop 16 in Undemocratic.
Prop 16 imposes a 66% votes to pass any new laws.
If you have been in any group, you know how impossible it is to even get a 51% approval to pass a simple agreement.
Now PG&E wants to require a vote of 66% before any new law to install Solar power in any county can be passed.
June 2010, Vote NO, NO, NO on 16. It is a sick law.
Likewise, Prop 14 is a fascist attempt to ban the Green Party & Peace & Freedom Party from the ballot.
Vote “NO” on Prop 14, to develop democracy.

News Update: BP Plc Being Criminally Investigated by Justice Department
The Justice Department is now investigating if BP Plc (NYSE:BP) has violated any criminal or civil laws in the April 20th Gulf of Mexico disaster; the largest U.S. oil spill in history.
Attorney General Eric Holder announced the investigation Tuesday at a news conference in New Orleans.
“We will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, anyone who has violated the law,” said Holder. “We will prosecute anyone who has violated the law.”
Shares of BP are trading down 14.97% at $36.52.

BP Atlantis Whistleblower Ken Abbott – Interior Dept Aware of Safety Problems

NEW ORLEANS — The Deepwater Horizon leak is now leading to safety concerns on another BP rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
The BP Atlantis is located in more than 7000 feet of water, 150 miles south of New Orleans.
According to a lawsuit filed Monday in Houston, the rig is plagued by some of the same possible safety problems as the Horizon. It claims the Department of the Interior allowed Atlantis to operate without completed engineering blueprints needed to operate the rig safely.
“This is not a mere paperwork. Without these as-built drawings, the people that are working on these rigs, are flying blind from the standpoint of how to safely operate BP rigs in the Gulf of Mexico,” said plaintiffs’ attorney Mikal Watts.
Watts represents the environmental group Food and Water Watch and former BP sub-contractor Ken Abbott.
BP fired Abbott, a project control supervisor, last year after he voiced concerns about a lack of documentation on Atlantis.
“At BP, I beat my head against the wall, they didn’t care, the government agencies didn’t care,” said Abbott.
Abbott said a congressional investigation into the Deepwater Horizon spill indicated that BP could not locate detailed drawings for the rig’s blowout preventer and that workers wasted half a day trying to shut off a valve that had already been disconnected.
“BP and Transocean should have had final drawings on that site,” said Abbott. “Not having it could have given the guys wrong readings and it could have caused them to make mistakes in a critical moment that could have caused the accident.”
Abbott’s suit asks a federal judge to shut down BP Atlantis until the rig can provide proper engineering documents and address other safety concerns.
